Joe McClaren is a recruitment and football operations specialist with a career built around identifying talent, shaping recruitment strategy, and translating game insight into actionable decisions for clubs and player management. With experience across English professional football and the Dutch game, he combines traditional scouting judgement with strong tactical analysis and recruitment analysis capability.
Joe currently works as Head of Football Operations at New Era Global Sports Management (since May 2022), managing players and supporting the operational and strategic aspects of representation. In this role, his background in club recruitment and market knowledge helps guide decision-making around player pathways, opportunities, and long-term planning.
Before moving into football operations, Joe spent over five years as Head of Recruitment at Derby County FC (November 2016–May 2022), leading the club’s recruitment function through a demanding period and overseeing processes connected to talent identification, scouting coverage, and squad planning. Prior to that, he worked at Southampton FC as National Emerging Talent Scout (July 2015–November 2016), scouting and leading work focused on identifying top emerging players from U15 through to first-team level.
Earlier in his career, Joe was Senior Scout and Scouting Coordinator at Derby County (January 2014–June 2015), covering the UK and Europe, and served as Lead Technical Scout at FC Twente (January 2012–December 2013). At Twente, his responsibilities included producing league reports for the technical leadership, monitoring target players, filtering leads from scouts and agents, building player video and statistical packages for recruitment meetings, and maintaining communication with first-team staff on priority targets. He began his pathway in analysis through a Performance Analysis internship at Nottingham Forest FC (July–September 2011), supporting match filming, opposition analysis, and scouting video compilation.
Educated at York St John University, and fluent in English and Dutch, Joe’s expertise sits in tactical analysis, recruitment analysis, and game insights—helping clubs and stakeholders make clearer decisions about player potential, fit, and progression.
